Life is a big canvas

For this week, we studied about how advertisement influences people and the journey in making an effective advertisement. This lecture was lead by Mr Mustafa.

Firstly, we were to know on what is the meaning of advertisement? From my point of view, it is a sort of mass that carries the information of a certain subject or product to attract people into buying the product. It is a way of communication between the seller and also audience.

Advertisement is also known for being annoying and a clutter to some people. There may be too much or too little of advertisements in a page of any sort of mass communications. 

There are some ways in making a very good advertisement and to not annoy people while you are advertising a product;

~Don’t have an ad too long too view. The longer that ad is, more people will feel bored and annoyed by it.

~Make it simple. Having a complicated kind of ad makes people think what kind of message that the seller is giving. They also would likely to use less of their brain in thinking this kind of thing.

~Spread the words. Don’t make an ad fully on one source, varies it so that more people will recognize the product and feel attract to it. Have it in the social media, mass productions and others, make them recognize the item you are selling.

There may be more but I guess I’ll stop here for now. Advertisement is a big influence on people and the sellers need to know how to control it to make a profit.

*This week was the 10th week and that last week for the class. It is also the last post I’ll put inside my blog, I suppose. It had been fun posting and learning about how to to be creative and also learned about the history of arts and designs. Thank You to everyone that has helped.

During week 9, we did a sort of ‘history’ with Mr Yap Sau Bin. He was telling us about the arts from decades before and showed us some of the artworks. Last semester, we studies about Dadaist, Surrealist and recently in this subject Juxtaposition.

All of the things or arts that he showed us connect with things that do not make sense to the eye and mind as it is surreal and illogical to people. But he showed us that even with this kind of things, they can be an art or a design, making them look creative.

From a photo montage to 3D surface in 2D screen, there have been a lot of design and arts that has been shown this past decades. As time goes by the arts has only gotten better and cooler, parallel with the current generations now.

I guess it shows that even if it past for another 10 or 20 years, arts is still going strong and probably better than what is shown now.

During this week, we studied about Random Word Association. The study was conducted by Mr. Yap Sau Bin. For this week, he taught us that by using some random words, you can create a new sort of idea or creation or even an evolution to make life better for people or living creatures(to make it easy). This may relates with Juxtaposition. The differences of them both is that Random Word Association uses characteristic of some random word to relate with the subject matter.

For example, the exercise that we did during class was that we need to make people stop smoking or alarm them about the danger of smoking.

The random word that was given to us was traffic light. It was really random to me. But he taught us that we should see that characteristics of the traffic light.

For instance; the color - how can the color help people from smoking? Since traffic light has 3 colors and the red one is the stop sign. Maybe if we put the traffic color on the cigarette, it’ll give them sign that it is dangerous too smoke.

Next, we can use metal - I would like to use a sort of metal that pop! once you connect it with heat. There are going to be a few metal along the cigarette, so when you want to inhale it, the heat connects with the metal, it’ll pop! startled the smoker, making them scared to smoke again.

Dirty - By making a cigarette that can be dirty as we touch and reveal a very strong words can make people stop smoking. Here is the example the kind of paper that goign to be use on the cigarette. 

Beneath the dirty paper, there are words such as ‘stop smoking’ or ‘the dirt will be in your heart once you smoke it’ or something like that.

Dirty - Another creation out of dirty is that the butt will be black as you inhale the cigarette. It is like saying that your heart will be ruin as you inhale more of it.

For me, this was a very good exercise or method to make myself more creative or something like that.

So, this week we studied about Juxtaposition, by Mr. Radzi Bedu. I learned that by doing Juxtaposition we can create a new idea by placing two variables together and turn them into something new or something less familiar.

We had a sort of ‘test’ by the lecture;

1. He asked us to pick 3 sets of numbers from 0 to 9.

I picked; 16,94,01

2. Then match the numbers with the words given by him.

I got;  

            16-Flower Spider

            94-Leave Mountain

            01-Fly Water

3. Form a picture that relates to the words.

Flower Spider - 

Leave Mountain - 

Fly Water - 

4. Merge the two words into one.

-Flowerspider

-Leavemountain

-Flywater

5. Draw a picture from the word.

I’d say it was quite tiring trying to draw the impossible becoming possible but I tried..I think.

After that, he asked us to merge some animals from pictures that he gave that cannot connects or relates to each other. I might say this is not really a tough thing to do.

I made;

Last but not least, we were given some pictures by him and we need to create a sort of ‘poem’ that relates to the pictures given by him. For example:

Chilli -

Love is like chillies,

It’s too hot when you eat too much,

It’s too bland when you eat too little,

But a mixture of sugar and spices,

It can be sweet, sour and hot.

Clock -

Tick-tock, tick-tock,

time is ticking,

it does not wait for you,

it’s time for action,

to gain your own happiness.

Mortar and Pestle -

He is as strong as rock,

Even when life gets tough,

he does not fall,

he keeps going on until the end.

Coffee - 

The taste of bitter represent the hardship in your life and the tint of sweetness in your mouth that lingers after you consume it correspond to the happiness that you gain after it.

So, turns out I didn’t update my blog for few weeks. One of the reason is because I couldn’t find any idea. I actually did but did not publish it yet. I will if I have enough points to give out. Sincerely, sorry to my lecturer.

Okay, last week we did a mind map regarding mortar and pestle. The lecture was done by Mr. Radzi Bedu. I quite enjoy this class. We need to find few function of mortar and pestle besides the usual use of them. Though he only asked for three but I have come up with a few of them.

1. As hair curler

I know, I know, it’s heavy and can hurt the hair..oh, and your skin too. But let’s just assume it’s not that heavy. The pestle can be the grip and mortar is the clip. Won’t that be a unique thing? Isn’t this how past generation curl their hair?

2. As a punishment(Suffer)

This may look a bit gruesome to some people but I do believe that mortar and pestle can be punishment tools. The pestle is used as a tool to shut the persons mouth. It will be between mouth and the mortar is used to hit their hand or other parts of their body. It will be done until the person give up or not able to continue again.

3. Coconut

This may be a fun thing to do. Coconut catcher! It is a two person thing. One person will be on the tree with pestle and another on the ground with the mortar. The pestle is use as a tool to pull the coconut from its tree. Meanwhile, the mortar is used to catch the coconut. Though it may be dangerous for the catcher but I do think it may be fun.

4. Noise

This is good for the Muslims. It is because it can be a tool to wake people or announced the time for prayer. It’s a typical thing but it is what I can make of of these things.

5. Games

Baseball! Though Malaysian don’t really play this game but this may be the first. The pestle is the bat and mortar is like a goal. You need to put in the balls inside the mortar. The person with most balls inside the mortar wins. Easy isn’t it?

I guess these are all of my ideas for mortar and pestle. I may or may not put pictures for this but I hope you understand what I’m trying to explain. I’ll update the other posts later.

This week we learn about Mind-mapping. The lecture was conducted by Mr Mustafa Muzer. In this topic, he taught us on how to structure a mind map, to make it easy for us to produce an idea.

There are various way to produce an idea and mind mapping is just one of the way. In mind mapping, you have two types of mind map; logical mind map and also associated mind map. This week, he focuses on logical mind map and also its relation to stereotypes. In logical mind mapping, it connects to stereotypes; stereotype words is words or images that relates to central subject.

While for associated mind map; it generates random words and links between the words does not seem to have any connections,

For us to gain an idea, we need to create a logical mind map first then we continue it with the associated mind map.

We only need to know the rules in making mind map; the subject must be in the center of the page and make it big and dominant for the person to see. Then, we need to use color to easily identify the different ideas. Last but not least, we can draw to make the mind map interesting to see(associated mind-map)

I guess that is all I have to say for this week. I’ve learned a lot in how to make an easy to understand kind of mind map. Hope this is enough.

It may not be much but I’ve tried.

• What environmental condition existed?

For Islamic Era, they observe and study the previous Era in making arts and design and transform them into their own creation. It does not mean they plagiarise the previous artworks and design but rather takes the idea of creation and invent it in their own way. For example, the people of Arab, they study about ideas from China and India and put their own studies of ideas into it, making an art into a new kind of creation.

• What was the process of creativity?

The process that Islamic Era has taken is that, they study and observe other civilisations and innovate it into their own kind of creation. They made it with a touch of their own Islamic arts and designs, making the arts as their own unique creation.

    Last Monday we,as in the class, had Mr Mustafa as the lecturer. He talks about History. I’d say that it’s not my favorite topic but study is study. He asked few questions and one of them is ‘What Traits Made Them Creative?’

     What is trait? Theoretically, it is an approach to study human personality. I guess in this questions he asked, we have to find traits; behavior, thought and emotion that can make them, the before century’s people, in becoming a creative person. Since he gave us the choice whether to choose all era or one, I’ll pick the latter. I’d like to choose Islamic. But I guess in this, it is more of a general question rather than a specific era. So, this will be answered in my own way.

    What are the traits for people to be creative? Based on my internet research, there are tonnes of reasons for the traits but I’d like to pinpoint a few.

• Curiosity

Always be curious. I’d like to quote something, from a French philosopher, Voltaire. ’ Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.’ He’s saying that we should always ask question to solve the problem. I guess it is true because when you are curious, you can get more than just one answer.

• Intuition

Follow your intuition. Sometimes you will get what you want when you follow your intuition(and logic). For instance, Matt Drudge designed his Web site, following his own gut rather than what some Internet gurus said. He made his own terms and design, though people said it was not nice and all, he still continues it and has made one of the best site.

• Courage

Have a courage to try something new. If you are too scared to try it, it may be just a plain idea or creation. When you have the courage to make it, it may be beyond what you imagined. Have the courage to take the risk.

I think that are all the traits I can make off for now. Hope it’s enough to be given a point.

An OPEN DISCUSSION!!! This is what my lecturer wants. He wants to know what kind of situation or environment that can make me think creatively, invents things and all. Even I’m searching it now myself. He gave us this article to..help us(?) I read it, and.. I was amazed by all the things that was invented or innovated from the old times. I always wonder how they can come up with this idea and make it into an amazing creation.

So, how do I become creative? Firstly, I’d probably have to go through a difficult situation or problem as all the inventors had. Maybe if I have a problem, I can think of a way to make it easier. For example, in the video that our lecturer showed us, the speaker was telling us a story about the GPS inventor. How did it happen? He encounter a problem and he tries to find a solution to make him easier to find someone. I guess you can say that you have to have a situation happens to you before you can have an idea or and innovative item or subject for the future.

Secondly, by making an observation. I like looking at people, though my parents always say that it’s rude to do so but I can’t stop it. I mean, isn’t it interesting to look at others people view of life? At grandparents who reads newspaper while drinking coffee, the people that rushes through the traffics and also parents that take care of their children. It’s always interesting. I guess when you see other people’s struggle we will think of a way to solve the problem.

Not sure if I have a third. So, I guess I’ll end it here. If I got some more ideas, I will fill in.

Last Monday, our lecturer continues his lecture & slides from the previous week. This week he asked us to give some..opinions about the invention and innovation that is happening in our world. He gave us this article to help us.

The article is saying that the invention of tablet or the innovation of desktop and laptop are getting bigger and bigger. By the end of this year, people will start having tablet as their ‘thing’ to live off with. It’s also saying that the desktop, computer and all the electronics before this is far more expensive than in this current years.

This tells us that people have been taking tablets as their ‘it’ thing now. Before, people have to use the computer and desktop at home and not able to bring it anywhere they want. With an innovated creation, tablet, they can bring it anywhere they want and use it anytime they want. It shows that in the future, there may be a new innovated creation, we probably won’t even be bringing anything and uses hologram in the next generation.

Who knows what will happen in the future? But I do hope I’m one of the new creator or produce an innovation item for our future generation.
